Greenock's attractive esplanade provides a gently curving riverside walk just over a mile (1.6 km) long extending to the west from Ocean Terminal to the Royal West of Scotland Amateur Boat Club. It has spectacular views across the River Clyde to the towns of Kilcreggan and Helensburgh and also the surrounding hills and mountains. The capsized wreck of the sugar boat MV Captayannis is also a popular site from the Esplanade. The ship sank on the evening of 27 January 1974 during a severe storm while she was waiting to deliver sugar to the James Watt Dock in Greenock. Mainly in the summer months, the Esplanade area of the river is busy with numerous international cruise ships which dock at the Ocean Terminal located at the east of the Esplanade.
